Greensboro Economy

Greensboro is home to the corporate headquarters of the Honda Aircraft Company, Lorrillard Tobacco Company, VF Corporation, Volvo Trucks of North America, RF Micro Devices and the International Textile Group. Although traditionally associated with the textile, furniture, and tobacco industries, Greensboro leaders are attempting to attract new businesses in the high-tech and transportation/logistics fields.

Federal Express
In 1998, Federal Express (FedEx) chose to build and operate a $300 million Mid-Atlantic air-cargo package-sorting hub at the Piedmond Triad International Airport. It is expected to open by 2009 and should attract thousands of jobs. The planned FedEx hub has drawn developments such as Triad Tower, a planned 25-story office/condominium project for Greensboro near Piedmond Triad International Airport. The tower is expected to open in conjunction with the FedEx hub opening and will include amenities such as an aquarium, penthouse restaurant, public rooftop observation deck and possibly an IMAC theater.

Honda Aircraft Company
The Honda Aircraft Company announce in February of 2007 they would be building a world headquarters and multi-million dollar jet factor at Piedmond Triad International Airport. The new HondaJet is currently in development and scheduled for production in 2010. It’s projected that Honda Aircraft Company will bring several hundred jobs to Greensboro.

Gateway University Research Park
Jointly operated by North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Gateway University Research will consist of two 75 acre campuses. Slated for completion in 2007, the vision for the park is to be a center for research as well as the potential incubation and development of new industries. The research park is expected to employ more than 2,000 and span approximately one million square feet of research space.
