Neighborhoods

Greensboro's earliest neighborhood is College Hill, located between West Market Street and Spring Garden Street in and around Greensboro College. The Aycock and Fisher Park were the next to be established in 1895 and 1901 respectively. Irving Park was developed in 1911, surrounding the golf course of the Greensboro Country Club. The prestigious neighborhood includes large homes on ample lots, and remains popular today. Nocho Park, a neighborhood that emerged as Greensboro's premiere black residential area, is located on the east side of the city. It contains homes of college professors, business owners, and doctors.

With the popularization of the automobile during the early twentieth century, citizens were able to live far from the city core in surroundings that were remarkably rural in character. As a result, series of "streetcar suburbs" emerged, including Latham Park, Sunset Hills, Lindley Park, Hamilton Lakes, Starmount, Rankin, O. Henry Oaks, and Glenwood. Recent additions to the city include large-scale planned unit developments such as Adams Farm, Lake Jeanette, The Cardinal, New Irving Park, and Reedy Fork Ranch.

Relocating families often wonder if Greensboro is named for its lush green parks and expansive greenways. While that seems appropriate, the city actually derives its name from a Revolutionary War hero. Residents will be glad to tell you the story of Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Greene who fought Lord Cornwallis' British troops at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. The battle is re-enacted annually on the original site, which is now a 220-acre park. Founded in 1808, Greensboro is proud not only of its history, but also of the beautiful community that has evolved over the centuries.

The rolling hills of the Piedmont rising up from the coastal plain to the mountains are the beautiful backdrop of North Carolina's third largest city. Home to Fortune 500 companies and entrepreneurial businesses alike, Greensboro boasts an increasingly diverse corporate community. Among the major employers are VF Corporation, Lorillard Tobacco Co. Cone Mills, Burlington Industries, RF Micro Devices, Jefferson Pilot Corporation ,Volvo Trucks, United Healthcare of North Carolina, and five universities and colleges.

Downtown Greensboro offers entertainment opportunities and delightful strolls in a growing hub of urban activity. You'll find dozens of restaurants, new boutiques, The Carolina Theatre, The Cultural Arts Center, The Children's Museum, The Historical Museum, War Memorial Stadium, and a cadre of antique stores. Old Greensboro consists of about 5 blocks downtown that overflow with antiques shops, bookstores, and restaurants, and is home to the Civil Rights Museum. Downtown comes alive throughout the year with street festivals, Fun Fourth, fund raisers and the community arts.

Greensboro has plenty to offer the sports fan. The Greensboro Bats, a Class A farm club of the Florida Marlins, play at the downtown War Memorial Stadium. While you might not imagine the South as a hotbed of hockey talent, The Greensboro Generals attract fans to their games at the 23,000 seat Greensboro Coliseum. Football fans cheer on the Greensboro Prowlers Arena Football team and even make the short drive to Charlotte to root for the NFL's Carolina Panthers. A major annual sporting event is the PGA's Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic, held at the Forest Oaks Country Club each spring. If you happen to be a duffer yourself, you'll enjoy the numerous courses throughout the area. Don't miss the championship course and the players course just north of town at Bryan Park, a beautiful municipal park.

Greensboro boasts an active arts community. The historic Carolina Theatre, which retains all of its1927 splendor, hosts productions from local and touring stage groups and the Cinema Society's monthly series of classic films. Greensboro is also home to the nation's oldest continually operating dinner theatre, the Barn Dinner Theatre. War Memorial Auditorium bustles with national Broadway tours, Greensboro Opera, Greensboro Symphony, Children's Theatre and a delightful assortment of headline entertainers and performers.

Pack a picnic and hit any one of over hundred parks throughout the community. Explore our history and entertain the children at Country Day Park and visit the Natural Science Center. Soccer fields, baseball diamonds, jogging and biking trails and numerous tennis courts carefully planned and located throughout the city draw families to the greater outdoors our climate affords. Residents also enjoy the more than 30 miles of nature trails around Lake Brandt and Lake Townsend.

Housing opportunities in Greensboro are extensive, diverse and beautiful. This is true whether your style is the charming old homes in neighborhoods such as Fisher Park, Sunset Hills, Irving Park, and Green Valley.or you prefer newer homes in neighborhoods such as Brassfield, Lake Jeanette, Friendly Acres, or Starmount Farms. From stately southern mansions to starter homes, Greensboro and the Triad provide tremendous opportunities for families to follow their dreams.

A diverse business community, wide variety of neighborhoods, and forward thinking citizens, combined with a multitude of options for shopping, recreation, restaurants and parks, make Greensboro a great place to work and live!
